After many rumors and hints, it seems more likely than ever that the Xbox One will be getting a supped up, more powerful version in the near future. Both Kotaku and Polygon are reporting detailed information from multiple sources on what is being internally called "Xbox Scorpio", targeted for 2017. The Scorpio is reported to be more than 4 times more powerful than the current Xbox One, operating at aound 6 teraflops. The current Xbox One peaks at 1.32 teraflops, and from comparison's sake, the PS4 at 1.84 teraflops, and the PS4 will reportedly be around 4.14 teraflops. This means that the "Scorpio" will become the most powerful console on the market, by a healthy margin.

More details include that it will ship with a 2TB HDD by default, and, as with the PS4/PS4K Microsoft is targeting backwards and forwards compatibility, with the newer device playing games at higher resolutions and framerates. No pricing tier is currently known, as MS said to still be mulling it over. It's also reported that Microsoft is specifically targeting specs to fully support the Oculus Rift, with a partnership with Oculus in the works.

In addition to the Scorpio, there is supposedly a smaller, cheaper Xbox One currently in the works for a release later this year. It is believed that both new consoles will be revealed next month, likely at or around E3, though Microsoft may not have this locked down yet.

Both consoles are part of Microsoft's "Helix" strategy, which represents the further convergence of the Windows and Xbox brands. Microsoft has already announced that most of their currently revealed games will be shipping on both Xbox One and Windows, and many Windows 10 apps and games will be coming to Xbox One this summer.

Oh yeah? Well, yeah, will it bring an entirely new way of playing games?

Huh, will it?

I didn't think so!

I can see the new tag line:

I was thinking even further--that since they are going backwards with their naming convention, the next system will be Xbox Sub-Zero, effectively one-upping (or downing) anyone looking to make their next console Zero.

Project Scorpio was confirmed by Microsoft today.  It is scheduled to launch in holiday 2017 and will be the Xbox One's bigger brother aiming toward 4K and VR gaming.
