Originally announced last year, the Nintendo Switch Online service was to be Nintendo's first ever subscription based service for online multiplayer and online features.  This was the initial announcement from 2017:

Users would have three time frames to pick from to subscribe including playing 20 dollars for a full year's service.  There is also a mobile app available that allows voice chat and game invitations, but nobody uses that app outside accessing the Splatoon 2 gear shop.  However the subscription service has been delayed once and once again has been delayed again.

This comes from the latest strategy briefing...

Next let's talk about Nintendo Switch Online, the paid subscription service that expands the online functionality of the Nintendo Switch. We reported previously that the service would launch in 2018, and now the official start time has been set to September 2018. Work is progressing on ways to further heighten the gaming experience for consumers. Details will be made available as they are finalized.

I still just want details about whether I'll have to buy multiple subscriptions so that each Switch user can get online.

I'll fork over the $20/year, especially if they make some improvements to the infrastructure to move away from peer-to-peer networking, and move to actual servers, so that we don't get connected because the connection to a remote player was lost. Truthfully, I don't get that error very much in any of the games I play online, but it's still kind of annoying when it happens.

Can't wait for those "Exclusive Deals", too! I need access to more mobile wallpapers and calendar JPGs. :|

Nintendo says FUCK YOU to everyone who wanted Virtual Console on Switch.

https://www.polygon....virtual-console

They're gonna have the gay-ass "select NES games with online multiplayer" bullshit, which fucking NOBODY wants, but you can kiss goodbye your hopes of digital rereleases of classic titles on Switch. Now we'll never get the glorious GCN titles for download on Switch.

So let me get this straight...

All these kids playing Splatoon 2 have to ask their parents to pay for this service because all of a sudden the online isn't free anymore?

oh boy.

*sigh* Once again, plant gets things wrong and comically over-reacts. They can and likely will still release older games, whether through that NES service thing or through other means. They just are retiring the Virtual Console name. We could still see SNES, N64, or even Wii and Wii U games being rereleased digitally on the switch, but they just won't be branded under the Virtual Console label anymore.

Nintendo has stated from the start that the "NSO" service would be a a premium service.  They originally were to deploy this paid service last year, but delayed it until Sept. 2018.

Lol, so hilarious, right????

I know it's just the banner being killed, but this still spells out the end for the efforts to release most of the best classic games on the console. Nintendo is taking the approach of letting you pay a subscription fee to have access to a small library of games. They may someday extend this service to include SNES and N64 titles, but I doubt it.

Most NES games aren't worth playing in multiplayer, anyway. SMB is boring as shit for Player 2. I play tons of levels before dying, P2 fucks up on 1-1, then I resume another level-clearing marathon.

Anyway, the online price is good. Most adults who bought a Switch and Splatooge 2 for their kids are probably aware of online gaming subscription fees, and it shouldn't hurt too much to pay that cost... I'm sure there will be a good number of cases of totally ignorant parents, but it's funny when I hear my students make comments about their parents gaming. Our gaming generation is already making babies of gamers. Gaming parents know the deal.
