Restarting this thread after some news hit today.

Basically, it looks like there's gonna be DLC which will include, among other things, two new playable characters which only the most die-hard Sonic fans will recognize. Additionally, there will be a new physical edition with all the updates built in.

I got this near launch. The more I played it, the more it felt like an obvious fan game. Tons of classic Sonic stage assets haphazardly slapped together into really long stages that overstay their welcome. I dropped this game and picked it up a few days ago to finish the final stage. There's more to do in this game after the main story (and I've only played through it once as Sonic+Tails combo), but I feel I'm done with it. Adding new obscure-ass characters for this playable fanfic isn't gonna do it any favors either.

I'm guessing it's someone from Knuckles Chaotix, but that might not be obscure-ass enough.

I humbly highly disagree with you Plant. It’s a great game. I think the mechanics are great fun. It’s way, way better than Forces.

Have you finished the game yet?
The stages start off decent, but they gradually get worse.

The longer you play the game, the more it shows its ugly head as an obvious fan project. There are tons of classic Sonic game stage assets, but they're thrown together to make these Sonic Mania stages. If SEGA made a "Sonic Maker" game, Sonic Mania would feel like a run-of-the-mill offering. The final stage is an absolute trudge, since it is so long, riddled with checkpoint after checkpoint, when all you want to see is the fuckin finish line.

Sonic Mania shines the brightest when it's being original... which is unfortunately rarely the case. So what is this? Above all, if say it's the bonus stage where you try to snag the chaos emeralds. However, once it's over, you have to try and find another one of those giant rings for another chance. Finding them in itself is a pain in the ass because the stages are so fuckin big. But even when you do, you're unlikely to be successful, because the chances to try this bonus stage are so few and far in between, and your prompt failure gives you little chance to practice and get better at its unique controls.

What else is original? The bosses. But while they're original, they feel out of place and overly aggressive by classic Sonic standards. You can count on losing your collection of coins every fucking time you fight a boss.

But yeah, Sonic Forces had its own rough spots, but I'd say that's a much better game. It took me a bit to get into it, but I really enjoyed it and happily went above and beyond to 100% Forces with all Trophies for the main have and Shadow DLC.

Godammit, Plant, don't you tire of being wrong all the time?! Everytime I see one of your post I shudder at the thought of reading more of your bullshit!

For the love of all that is good, they're called RINGS, not COINS!

GAWD!

Shit, that reminds me, I really need to finish Forces.

The levels in Forces are the complete opposite of Mania; they feel too short. This initially comes across poorly, but there are many stages to complete over the duration of the campaign, and you'll have to replay them all multiple times if you want to collect everything.

Chasing hidden collectibles is fun, rather than a burdensome chore, thanks to the compact design. Every stage has multiple paths along the road to the goal, but there are not tons of them That make the worlds feel like labyrinths (as Mania often does). You'll rarely need a guide to find the collectibles, so you won't have to spend excessive time on the endeavor.

Finding big rings in Mania, on the other hand, is needle-haystack bullshit. It's not a terrible game, but all too frequently it can't shake the feeling of a second rate fan project. I was hoping this would be "Sonic 4: For Real This Time," but it ended up disappointing me.
